Adam Formal, PhD

Consulting Psychologist

Dr. Formal is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in NY, NJ and D.C., as well as a NY State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC, MC). He is the Founder of Formal Therapy, a private practice in New York City offering in-person and virtual services through Psypact, where he specializes in treating anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders, with a strong emphasis on supporting elite athletes and high performers.

Dr. Formal also currently serves as the Director of Mental Health for Maccabi USA, managing a mental health team that supports the Team USA athletes through a focus on performance and well-being. He has worked with a wide range of clients, including current and former Olympians and Paralympians, business leaders, as well as the general population.

He holds a B.A. in Economics, Psychology, and Philosophy from Rutgers University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University. His clinical background includes work in inpatient and outpatient hospital units, emergency psychiatric services, HIV clinics, college counseling centers, and dual-diagnosis programs.
